FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
How does TruTemp determine the size
of Air Conditioner or Furnace needed for your home?
The size of Air Conditioner or Furnace you need is calculated
by looking a number of factors which include looking at the
square footage of your home, the window and door conditions,
insulation, the amount of insulation in the walls and ceilings,
amount of sunlight that comes through your windows, how much
shade the home receives from large trees around the home or
building.
Why should I go with a high efficiency
furnace or air conditioner?
A high efficiency furnace or air conditioner will give you more
economical utility bills. The additional cost of a high efficiency
furnace is usually made up with in three to six years, air conditioners
can take a little longer to recoup the higher initial investment.
Why is it critical to size an air conditioner?
When a system is oversized, you pay more than you need to at
installation and you are not removing moisture as well on a
hot, humid day. Your system should be designed to run at 100
percent at 90 degrees to maintain a indoor temperature of 73
degrees. The system should achieve about a 15 to 17 degree drop
from inside to outside temperature. High humidity will reduce
this difference.
Why do I have to line the chimney when a new furnace is installed?
The code of 1993 requires that all masonry chimneys be resized
and lined with all new furnace installations. The flue gas from
your old furnace was 400 to 600 degrees. The new efficient furnace
is about 320 to 350 degrees. The flue gases start to condense
at about 280 degrees and will produce acidic moisture that attacks
the mortar and will damage the chimney over time from the inside.
What is AFUE?
You've
probably heard the term, "Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency,
or AFUE" rating for gas furnaces, but what, exactly, does
that mean? Quite simply, the AFUE rating is a measure of how
much of each dollar's worth of gas burned by your furnace goes
toward heating your home. Federal Department of Energy standards
require that all new gas furnaces have an efficiency rating
of at least 78%, which means that 78 cents out of every dollar's
worth of burned gas translates to heat. The new ultra-high efficiency
furnaces have AFUE ratings of over 90%. By contrast, no matter
how well you think your gas furnace is working, if it was manufactured
before 1982, chances are that at least 30 cents of every heating
dollar is going right up your vent pipe!
What
is SEER? (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)
The
total cooling of an air conditioner in BTU's during a normal
annual usage period divided by it's total electrical watt hours
for the same period. The higher the number, the more efficient
the equipment. Pre 1985 equipment is typically under 8 seer.
